Uit een nauwe samenwerking tussen onderzoekers, tekenkamer en mechanische werkplaats ontstond in korte tijd de FTI-octopool. Een typisch praktijkvoorbeeld van productontwikkeling op een wetenschappelijk onderzoeksinstituut, en dagelijkse praktijk op het FOMInstituut voor Atomaire en Moleculaire Fysica (AMOLF) in Amsterdam.
