Chapter 4: Thermo-mechanical modeling

Introduction

Generaly, three methods are used to model thermal and/or thermomechanical systems:

  • Lumped capacitance models
  • Advanced hand calculations
  • Numerical models, such as FD or FE models.

The following flowchart might help choosing the right model for your application:

4.2 Lumped capacitance modeling

4.3 Advanced hand calculations

Numerical models are not discussed in detail. Below a calculators are presented:

Lumped mass – steady state
Calculate the temperature of a model with multiple bodies connected with conduction, convection and radiation couplings.

Lumped mass – Transient
Calculate the temperature of a model with multiple bodies connected with conduction, convection and radiation couplings. The steady state temperature situation and the temperature distribution in time can be calculated.

Bimetal deflection
Calculate the deflection of a multi layer strip due to temperature.
