Hoewel ooit voornamelijk gebruikt in lichtbelaste ultraprecisie-instrumenten, worden lineaire motoren tegenwoordig steeds vaker gebruikt in positioneersystemen voor zeer veel verschillende toepassingen. Omdat de prijzen ervan dalen en omdat de krachtdichtheid toeneemt worden deze motoren voor veel constructeurs een interessant alternatief ten opzichte van conventionele aandrijvingen.
