De vacuumsleeptank is in het byzonder gebouwd om het cavitatie-gedrag van scheepsschroeven te meten, alsmede de uitwerking die deze cavitatie heeft op de schroeven en het schip. Dit artikel behandelt de historische ontwikkeling van de proeven mbv modellen van schepen, de schaalwetten waaraan moet worden voldaan om de modelproeven zinvol te maken en de technieken die worden gebruikt om de cavitatie in de vacuumtank waar te nemen.
