Counterfeiting, het illegaal namaken van spullen, is een serieus probleem in diverse industrietakken zoals de luchtvaart en de automobielindustrie. De Organisatie voor Economische Samenwerking in Parijs (OESO) meldde in 1998 bijvoorbeeld dat 10% van de onderdelen in de luchtvaart vervalst zijn. TNO doet onderzoek naar het beveiligen van metalen voorwerpen.
