Uiteenlopende microscopische technieken kennen nu al duizelingwekkende resoluties, tot onder de nanometer.Met als resultaat – meestal statische – plaatjes die onder kunstmatige omstandigheden, zoals vacuüm, zijn gemaakt.Om fysische, chemische en biologische processen die zich op atomair en moleculair niveau afspelen, nog beter te kunnen begrijpen, moeten ze live en onder realistische (lees: industriële) omstandigheden in beeld worden gebracht. Dat is de uitdaging van het Smart Mix-programma NIMIC (Nano IMaging under Industrial Conditions).
