Door de ontwikkeling van laser koeling technieken is het mogelijk de temperatuur van atomen drastisch te verlagen, waardoor het tegenwoordig in veel laboratoria over de hele wereld mogelijk is om routinematig atomen te produceren met temperaturen in het miliKelvin regime. In dit artikel zal ik nader ingaan op de principes van laser koeling en uitleggen hoe atomen stilgezet kunnen worden met behulp van lasers en magneetvelden.
