Kwarts is een relatief jong materiaal. Pas in 1821 bracht E.D. Clarke enkele stukjes witte kwarts in een zuurstof/waterstof vlam en verkreeg een heldere substantie – kwartsglas. Dit artikel gaat in op de geschiedenis, de terminologie, de zuiverheid en de eigenschappen van kwartsglas.
