De warmtepomp is een apparaat waarmee energie van een lager naar een hoger temperatuurniveau kan worden gebracht. Bij deze hoge temperatuur kan de energie weer nuttig gebruikt worden, de verbruikte energie wordt dan weer recycled. Doordat de hoeveelheid toegevoerde energie geringer is dan de totaal beschikbare energiehoeveelheid is de warmtepomp een interessante mogelijkheid voor efficiente energievoorziening.
