De stijfheid van een mechanisme speelt een dominante rol in het dynamisch gedrag. De plaatsfout is omgekeerd evenredig met de stijfheid tot de macht 3/2. Overbrengingsverhoudingen groter dan 1 kunnen een funeste rol spelen in de stijfheid. Bij de onderlinge vergelijking van de deelstiifheden ter plaatse van de uitgaande beweging geldt immers: de stijfheden van onderdelen gelegen tussen de vaste wereld en een overbrenging moeten worden gedeeld door het kwadraat van die overbrengingsverhouding.
