Tracking photons on-the-fly

Free-space optical communication comes with specific challenges, such as very precise pointing in the presence of atmospheric turbulence and platform vibrations.


In the UltraAir project, led by Airbus DS, a technology demonstrator is being developed of an airborne laser communication terminal. This Mikroniek article presents the design challenges, implementation and performance of the demonstrator’s acquisition and tracking sensor. (Image courtesy of TNO)
