The next generation of gas-foil bearings

A high-quality standardised gas foil bearing (GFB) programme for turbomachinery up to 100 kW electrical power is presented.

It includes beam-type journal and bump- and multi-layer-type thrust bearings covering 15.5-41 mm shaft diameters. Design and performance details are given in this Mikroniek article. Optimisation tools for design and different gasses (fluids) as used in HVAC-R are discussed. Recent innovations such as a 15% reduction in thrust bearing power loss and PFAS-free coatings are highlighted. Manufacturing methods and the excellent process and product quality of stamped foils with Cpk > 2 are shown. (Image source: Bosch)
