Microcredentials: macro-effect for professionals

This month, the first microcredentials have been awarded to the participants who successfully took part 1 of the course ‘Mechatronics System Design’ by Mechatronics Academy in cooperation with their partner High Tech Institute.

Since 2008 DSPE has been exploiting its certification programme for post-academic courses. This successful programme (since 2015 in collaboration with euspen) is stimulating and guiding education for professionals. It has been well attended over the years. Last year, DSPE decided to modernize this programme by introducing microcredentials. Microcredentials are digital diplomas and certificates stored in an individual’s own secure diploma safe and they last a lifetime.

The credentials are micro in comparison with course durations in universities and other educational institutes. Besides offering digital storage, DSPE also plans to extend the number of certified courses substantially – the aim is 200+ courses – on different NLQF (Dutch National Qualifications Framework) levels: 7 = master; 6 = bachelor; 5 = associate degree; 4 = secondary vocational; 3 = primary vocational. Last but not least, DSPE will introduce learning pathways, to offer advice and guidance to professionals on life-long learning in their domain.

As an independent society for precision engineering with members (specialists) all over the precision domain, DSPE is highly qualified to assess the quality and societal relevance of precision engineering courses. These values are anchored by the DSPE Educational Board. For support of the DSPE educational programme, an Industrial Board has been established, with representatives from, a.o., ASML, ThermoFisher Scientific, Demcon and VDL. DSPE is certain this programme will have a macro-effect on precision professionals.
