Einstein Telescope R&D consortia overview

Our universe vibrates when black holes or neutron stars collide. These vibrations propagate away from their origin as gravitational waves.

Albert Einstein predicted that distances stretch and contract almost immeasurably when gravitational waves pass by. The Einstein Telescope (ET) will be a third-generation gravitational-wave detector and will measure gravitational waves by constantly monitoring the length of its three detector corridors with sensitive lasers and vibration-free suspended mirrors. This will enable ET to detect up to a thousand times more gravitational-wave events than its predecessors. This Mikroniek article highlights the collective efforts of six Dutch R&D consortia developing key technologies for ET. (Image credit: Caltech/MIT/LIGO lab/(T. Pyle))
